TAIWAN – TYPHOON MORAKOT

Richard Hotes believes that going to where you’re needed — not simply giving money to worthy causes — is the best way to help the poorest of the world’s poor. His philosophy is borne from 30 years of mission experience across the globe. Richard was on the scene in 2009 in Taiwan when Hotes Foundation volunteers began Typhoon Morakot humanitarian efforts in a small mountain village. A deadly mudslide had claimed the lives of about 600 people. When Richard asked survivors what their greatest need was, they said temporary housing while they rebuilt their village. Hotes donated 12 housing units from his company, Alaska Structures. The volunteers and villagers worked together to put up the shelters, making life in the disaster area much safer for survivors.

Over the past 12 years, the Hotes Foundation has performed over 70 missions in more than 10 countries, including: Pakistan, Peru, Mexico, Bangladesh, Philippines, Haiti, Kenya, Somalia and Ethiopia. Volunteers have provided much-needed food and medical supplies, as well as building temporary and permanent structures, including hospitals and command centers. Fully funded through Richard’s monetary contributions, the Hotes Foundation is always looking for volunteers who are ready to roll up their sleeves and make a difference.
