NEW YORK – GROUND ZERO 9/11

While much of the world watched in horror as terrorists attacked the United States of America on September 11, 2001, Richard Hotes and a group of his employees felt an overwhelming sense of duty. Moved by what they saw, and secure in the knowledge that they could make a difference, Richard and his employees traveled as volunteers to Ground Zero in New York City to help clear the rubble where the World Trade Center’s Twin Towers once stood. Using shelters donated by Alaska Structures, Richard and his group set up command shelters for the heroes of the New York Fire Department as they continued their solemn mission to find survivors amid the wreckage.

Over his 30 years of charitable missions, Richard has learned that leadership on the ground can be the difference between recovery and continued misery. While the leadership of rescue and recovery efforts in New York was rightly viewed as outstanding, Richard knew his experience in helping others and expertise in portable shelter systems would be a valuable addition. He also discovered the value that volunteers add to his missions, and Richard has recruited volunteers for every mission since.
