APPALACHIA

Hotes Foundation volunteers strive to make a positive difference in the lives of the poorest of the poor, no matter where they live. Sometimes those volunteers get to help people in need who are closer to home. One Hotes Foundation volunteer and his family decided that, for Christmas, they wanted to give toys and food to people living in extreme poverty in Appalachia, home to nine of the poorest counties in the U.S. When their mission was complete, the family had handed out 900 toys and supplied more than 40 families with several weeks of food, making for a merrier Christmas for recipients.

Richard Hotes had a simple goal when he started the Hotes Foundation — he wanted to end poverty as we know it. The task is immense, but Hotes Foundation volunteers have proven that anything is possible when hard work and dedication come together.
